on Tallman Mountain - Continues

Friday morning, 8/23/2024
This is the upper rock pile, these rocks,
have to be moved down to our current worksite

This upper section of this trail,
is in serious need of repair

Moving big rocks downhill is easier and faster,
than moving them uphill… duh

Down at the worksite, step building continues

This is Bob hand fitting step #77

Of course it's level

Howie keeps it stable using lots of crush

The next step is in,
Howie is securing it in place

This lower rock pile is almost depleted

Lunchtime:
The step building half of the crew at the bottom,
The rock moving half at the top

We kept moving forward for the rest of the day,
with more steps and crib-wall sections added

Saturday morning,
the crew begins to assemble in parking lot D.
New volunteer Trinity, is joining us today

Dr. Dave is called in to do some chainsaw work

We needed a clearer path to move the big rocks

Trinity now on belay

Russ and Howie wrestle with the next step

It's a big one and we want a really tight fit

Howie secures it all,
with crush, crush and more crush

Trinity kept busy, now she's making crush

Eager to learn, Trinity is working the griphoist

While Trinity works the griphoist,
Howie and Bob move the next step.

Hikers stop, observe and are amazed
at how it all happens

It's Sunday morning and Jim is getting the griphoist ready

Howie and new volunteer Phillip
start work on the next step

New crib wall sections have been added
to support the steps on the downhill side

Trinity is back,
now digging a spot for the next crib-wall rock

Philip is adding more crush and support rocks
to help keep this step level

Dan attempts to build a crib wall base,
it's not easy, that's bedrock

Jim tries to break off a piece of bedrock
using an 8 pound double jack

Trinity and Howie
are building a crush base for the next step

Using a 4 pound hand hammer,
Dan continues to shape the crib wall base

To break off just the end of this rock,
Chris deploys the shaping hammers

Well, that didn't go quite as planned,
but we still can use the rock

A nearby rock will become the next step

Putting the sling on correctly is very important,
it keeps the rock from dropping while being moved

Trinity steps right in there and starts moving the dirt

Lunch break on a very humid Sunday afternoon

It's something about breaking rocks and making crush,
that is Terri 's Zen

Phillip prepares the base
for the next crib wall section

Here it comes, and it's a big one

Now that it's in, it's time for the next step

This big heavy flat rock,
will make a perfect step

Way to go Volunteers,
that's eight new steps this weekend

One last look uphill,
onward and upward, one step at a time

This was the second step built today,
some are easier than others
